Mickelson vs. Tiger: The Value of Your Reputation

Posted on April 11, 2012

Consumers describe Mickelson as being down-to-earth

Here’s something I wouldn’t have expected; when it comes to general marketability of professional golfers Phil Mickelson is miles ahead of Tiger Woods.

According to the research company Nielsen and another company called E-Poll who’s N-Score measurement is all about determining endorsement potential for stars, Mickelson has a score of 75 while Woods is at just 41.

The world is much more aware of Woods, with 73% of consumers saying they know who he is, but just 17% say they like him. Just three percent of people polled describe Woods as “down to earth” while 52% say Mickelson is appealing to them.

I’ll bet these numbers were very different a few years ago. What a good reminder that guarding your reputation is one of the most important things you can do to maintain long-term career viability.
