Daddy, What’s a Clock Radio?

Posted on July 8, 2011

(The recent Jacobs Media Tech Survey finds that 68% of smart phone owners use their device’s alarm to wake up in the morning. The clock-radio may be on the endangered list soon. I originally addressed this in a post earlier this year which I’ve updated and reposted here. I will be back with new content on Monday (7/11))

One of the great military lessons of World War II is the adage, never fight a war on two fronts. Experts believe one of Germany’s biggest mistakes was invading Russia, opening up an eastern front while already fighting with other European countries to the west.

Now comes a research study of country radio listeners fielded by Coleman Insights that provides this frightening fact; just as many people use their smart phone to wake them up as use a clock radio.

So not only is radio looking at a new challenge in the car as streaming and internet access invade the dashboard, but now it appears we are going to have to fight for wake-up duties too.

This should strike a healthy amount of fear into even the best positioned morning show.

Now is the time to start considering new ways to remind listeners what a great resource radio can be in the morning.

It’s also important to live up to that promise.

If your show, or the morning show at your station, isn’t providing a good balance of information and entertainment for your listeners lookout, you may soon be replaced by a device fully capable of doing all those things: a smart phone.
