Social Media Without Opposable Thumbs

Thanks to information from doggyloot.com – a Groupon type service aimed at pet owners — I recently discovered that 86% of dogs do not have a Facebook account and 73% do not have their own YouTube channel.

But wait.

That means that more than one out of every ten dogs DOES have a Facebook page of their own!

More than a quarter of man’s best friends HAVE dedicated channels on YouTube!

It turns out even one out of every twenty dogs has a Twitter account!

Have you ever tried to tweet without opposable thumbs?!

That’s ridiculous.

But it does underscore just how obsessed Americans are with their dogs and pets in general.

Here’s a few more down-to-earth pet statistics courtesy of petfinder.com

  • 57% of American households have either a cat or dog.
  • That’s higher than most other countries in the world.
  • Nine out of ten pet owners consider their pet to be a part of the family.
  • Holiday presents for pets are a $5 billion market.
  • More than a third of households report taking their dog along on family vacations

So the next time you are looking for an event idea, a clever promotional item or a new topic to discuss, perhaps you should turn to the animal kingdom.

Just remember, even though some pets are social media savvy, focus on pet owners. Cats and dogs don’t get Arbitron dairies.
