Social Media in 4:30

Posted on October 28, 2010

One recurring theme that comes up when I talk with airtalent is the concept of using social media to build a personal brand that goes beyond just what listeners hear on your show. This isn’t a new idea by any means; successful personalities have worked to become multimedia stars for years through charity work, live performances, newspaper columns and other traditional vehicles.

Now the game has changed. If you are still doubting how big social media will become take the 4:30 to watch this video. If you already believe in the power of social media take the time to watch it anyway. It really puts the staggering level of growth social media has undergone into perspective.

The fact is the explosion of social media is a double-edged sword for airtalent.

On one hand, now more than ever, there are free, easy-to-use tools available to help personalities build their brand. Ten years ago a talent had to work harder to find outlets for additional content. Convincing the newspaper or local TV affiliate that working together would be beneficial wasn’t an easy task. On the other hand, when everyone has access to these tools, it is harder than ever to stand out.

Regardless of whether you think tools like blogs, YouTube and Facebook are a blessing or a curse, the reality is they are here to stay so it’s time to consider how best to use them to your advantage.

Shameless Plug: Of course, I’d be happy to help you chart a course through the turbulent waters of social media. If you are interested check out what I can do for you at the Talent Mechanic Website.
